The project, to be completed in phases over 41 months, will strengthen the Sarawak Grid for reliable electricity supply to the Miri population, the second largest city in Sarawak, as well as industries in and around the Northern Region in Sarawak.

Alstom will supply the necessary civil works, as well as products and commissioning, for the upgrade, including a new 275 kV switchyard and two new 240 MVA auto transformers.
